A Scholarly Monograph Published by Associate Prof. He Jun of the Department of German

A scholarly monograph of He Jun, associate professor of the German Department, School of Foreign Languages, was published by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Press. Guo Moruo’s Translation of German Works and Guo Moruo Studies in the German-Speaking World provides a relatively objective and fair reevaluation of Guo Moruo’s translation, especially his translation of German works, from the aspect of cross-cultural communication, which is aligned with the trend that scholars are paying more attention to “knowing others and discussing the circumstances they are in” on the appraisal of Guo.

From the perspectives of cultural turn and sociological turn in translation research, the monograph systematically studies Guo’s contributions to the translation of various fields, including German literature, Marxism, and art archaeology. Taking account of the historical, social, and cultural background of Guos time, the monograph presents the characteristics of his translation in terms of his reception of German culture, analyzing how he dealt with Western values and European concepts in his translation during his stay in Japan. In addition, by delving into the reception and spread of Guo and his works in the German-speaking world, the monograph explores development tendency of Guo Moruo’s translation research in the German-speaking field of Sinology studies from the perspectives of ideology, aesthetic orientation, and comparative studies of Lu Xun, which constructs a two-way relationship between Guo and German culture, and proves that both “western learning spreading to the east” and “Chinese learning spreading to the west” shall be a bidirectional path rather than a single track.

The German major of the School of Foreign Languages of SWJTU was approved by China’s Ministry of Education as a national first-class undergraduate construction site. Associate Professor He’s new monograph is another achievement of the Department of German in scientific research and discipline construction.
