SWJTU was a big winner in Sichuan final of 2015 National English Contest for College Students (NECCS) held in Sichuan University on May 10th. Ma Fandi from the School of Information Science and Technology won the Special Award; Wang Jin from School of Public Administration, Jin Sen, Liu Xiaohan, Zhang Yu and Su Weijian from School of Electrical Engineering, and Li Wansong from School of Foreign Languages, received the first prizes. These 7 prize winners will participate in the National Final on behalf of Sichuan province this summer. In addition, 19 students earned the second prizes and 38 the third.
NECCS, the only one national competition on college students’ comprehensive skills in English, consists of three phases: the college-level preliminary, the province-level final, and the national final. 1246 students registered for the SWJTU college-level preliminary, among whom 7 winners entered the Sichuan Final.
For better preparation for the final, SFL organized a group of teachers, including Zhang Rui, Sun Yin, Chi Weijia, Chen Siben, Li Jiya and Jiang Jing, to provide effective training for the finalists.
SWJTU has been implementing a student-centered, theme-oriented and activity-based teaching reform in college English (for non-English majors) teaching. As a compensational part to classroom teaching, extracurricular activities aim at improving the students’ English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills in a variety of pleasant cultural experiences. At the same time, extracurricular activities develop the students’ sense of achievement and confidence, and thus guarantee them impressive achievements in contests of the similar kind. In brief, SWJTU regards it as an important objective to deepen the reform of college English teaching so as to upgrade the students’ competiveness in international communication and exchange.
