On November 26, 2023, the national contest of the 2023“FLTRP·ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” National Foreign Language Contest for College Students, hosted by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press ( FLTRP), successfully concluded. Zheng Zhehao and Xiong Ziyan, students from the Translation Department of the School of Foreign Languages at SWJTU, won silver medals in this competition.

From the founding of “CCTV Cup” in 2002, to the renaming of “FLTRP Cup” in 2010, to the expansion of “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” in 2018, and upgrading to “Understanding Contemporary China” in 2023, the contest has always adhered to the concept of leading and value orientation. In 2013,the contest system has been renewed and the theme has been upgraded in order to deeply implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress, ensure that education its performs its fundamental mission of fostering virtue, and promote the deep development of the “Three Advancing Work”, cultivate more high-level internationalized talents with a sense of nationalism, global vision and professional skills for the country, improve the ability of China’s independent cultivation of international communication talents in the new era, and serve the country’s participation in global governance and the promotion of constructing a community with a shared future for mankind.

In the 2023 Sichuan Provincial Contest hosted by Sichuan University, more than 500 contestants from 53 universities across the province took part in the competition, while only 20 contestants advanced, including 16 Gold Medal winners, and the top 4 Silver Medal winners. Four of our contestants: Zheng Zhehao (Department of Translation and Interpretation), Xiong Ziyan (Department of Translation and Interpretation), Duan Haiyan (Department of English) and Wang Yifan (Scchool of Chemistry) rode the wave of the Sichuan Provincial Contest to win the Gold Medal and break through the contest successfully. Our university has become the university with the highest number of gold award winners and advanced students in Sichuan Province, achieving excellent results, as shown below..

After the provincial competition, Zheng Zhehao and Xiong Ziyan from the Department of Translation and Interpretation, together with two other contestants from Jiaotong University, put themselves into intense preparation for the national contest. After practical training and mutual communication, the four contestants from Jiaotong University achieved good results in the national competition. Zheng Zhehao and Xiong Ziyan won the Silver Award (8 silver award winners in Sichuan Province), while Duan Haisuan and Wang Yifan won the Bronze Award (12 bronze award winners in Sichuan Province).

In the midst of a prosperous era, we must live up to it. The Department of Translation and Interpretation will continue to uphold the concept of “understanding contemporary China” and the principle of ideological and political education, to cultivate foreign language talents who can shoulder the great responsibility of our country, and to realize the Chinese dream with the strengths of foreign languages. The students of the Department of Translation and Interpretation will continue to deepen their study of the theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics, achieve self-improvement, and under the cultivation of the college, demonstrate their youthful attitude and positive spirit in various foreign language proficiency competitions in the future, striving to become the pillars of the students who can spread the “contemporary Chinese concept”!
