The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC pointed out that we should promote cultural confidence and self-improvement, tell China’s stories and spread China’s voice well, present a credible, lovely and respectable image of China, and promote Chinese culture to the world. To profoundly implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and keep in mind the mission and responsibility of foreign language learners, on the evening of October 20th, the Institute of Foreign Languages held a lecture on the History of Foreign Language Teaching in Southwest Jiaotong University. Zheng Boren, a member of the writing group of “School History of Excellence” and a teacher from the English Department, was specially invited to give the lecture. Wu Jun, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the School, hosted the lecture.

Build the confidence of students by learning the history of institute and school

Mr. Zheng Boren first introduced the history of the school and institute. Since modern times, railway and locomotive are the important achievements of the western industrial revolution, and also the forefront of the world’s scientific and technological development. Therefore, in order to master the technology of railway construction and break the technological monopoly of western powers, we must cultivate our own talents in railway construction and management. In the past hundred years, Southwest Jiaotong University has cultivated more than 300,000 outstanding people, represented by Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen, Lin Tongyan, Huang Wanli, and so on. Among teachers and students, there have been three “Two Bombs and One Star” heroes, 64 academicians at home and abroad, and 38 national engineering survey and design masters. They not only have outstanding achievements, but also have great sense of righteousness. They have joined the army and participated in the construction of the Yunnan Myanmar Highway. Comrade Deng Xiaoping once spoke highly of the school: “This school has produced many talents”. Mr. Zheng emphasized the necessity and achievements of foreign language teaching and reminded the students not to belittle themselves. We institute has high reputation and cultivated a host of talents.
